Stomach Pain: Is It More Than Just a Meal?
Not every stomach ache is “just something you ate.” While occasional abdominal discomfort can happen after a heavy meal or temporary digestive upset, recurring stomach pain should not always be ignored.
Persistent or repeated abdominal pain can have many possible causes, ranging from indigestion and constipation to ulcers, gallstones, gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Understanding the possible causes can help you know when it is time to seek expert medical care.
What Causes Stomach Pain?
“Stomach pain” is often used to describe discomfort anywhere in the abdomen. However, the abdomen contains several organs, so pain may come from the stomach, intestines, gallbladder, urinary system, or other areas.
Some common causes of abdominal or stomach pain include:
1. Indigestion
Indigestion, also called dyspepsia, can cause upper abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating, nausea, belching, and feeling unusually full after eating. It may occur occasionally or become a recurring problem.
2. Constipation
Constipation can cause abdominal discomfort, cramping, bloating, and difficulty passing stools. If constipation or abdominal pain keeps returning, it may be worth discussing with a gastroenterologist.
3. Gastritis
Gastritis occurs when the stomach lining becomes inflamed. It can cause upper abdominal discomfort, nausea, and indigestion-like symptoms.
4. Peptic Ulcers
A stomach or duodenal ulcer can cause pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen. The pain may be burning or dull and can come and go. Peptic ulcers are commonly associated with H. pylori infection or certain medications, including NSAIDs.
5. Gallstones
Gallstones can cause abdominal pain, particularly pain in the upper or right side of the abdomen. Pain related to gallstones may be severe and can last for hours.
6. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
IBS may cause recurring abdominal pain along with changes in bowel habits, including constipation, diarrhea, or both.
7. Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Conditions such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, and weight loss. Symptoms may come and go in periods of flare-ups and remission.
When Should You Be Concerned About Stomach Pain?
Occasional stomach discomfort may resolve on its own, but recurring or persistent abdominal pain deserves attention. Medical evaluation is particularly important if your pain keeps coming back or is accompanied by other symptoms.
Speak with a healthcare professional if you experience:
Recurring or persistent stomach pain
Unexplained weight loss
Ongoing bloating
Frequent indigestion or heartburn
Persistent diarrhea or constipation
Difficulty swallowing
Loss of appetite
Repeated vomiting
Changes in your bowel movements
These symptoms do not necessarily mean you have a serious condition, but they may require further evaluation to identify the underlying cause.
Warning Signs That Need Urgent Medical Attention
Seek urgent medical care if abdominal pain is sudden, severe, or rapidly worsening, or if it occurs with symptoms such as vomiting blood, bloody or black stools, a rigid or very tender abdomen, chest pain, difficulty breathing, or fainting.
How Is Recurring Stomach Pain Diagnosed?
A gastroenterologist will consider your symptoms, medical history, pain location, duration, triggers, and associated symptoms. Depending on your situation, your doctor may recommend blood tests, stool tests, imaging, or procedures such as an upper GI endoscopy to investigate the digestive tract.
The goal is not simply to treat the pain—it is to understand why the pain keeps coming back and determine the appropriate treatment.
Don't Ignore Pain That Keeps Coming Back
A stomach ache after an occasional meal may be temporary. But when abdominal pain becomes recurrent, persistent, or unexplained, it is worth finding out what is causing it.
If your pain keeps coming back, it may be your body's way of telling you something.
