World Alzheimer’s Day: Understanding the Gut–Brain Connection
Alzheimer’s disease is widely recognized as a condition affecting memory and the brain, but growing scientific research is looking beyond the brain to understand how other systems of the body may be involved.
One area receiving increasing attention is the gut–brain axis—the complex communication network connecting the digestive system, the gut microbiome, the immune system, and the brain.
At Abu Hammour Gastroenterology Center in Dubai Healthcare City, we believe that understanding digestive health is an important part of understanding overall health.
What Is the Gut–Brain Axis?
The gastrointestinal tract contains trillions of microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiome. These microorganisms help with digestion, nutrient processing, immune function, and the production of substances that can influence the body and brain.
The gut and brain communicate through a network involving nerves, immune signals, hormones, and chemical messengers. This communication is known as the gut–brain axis.
What Does This Have to Do With Alzheimer’s?
Researchers are investigating whether changes in the gut microbiome may be associated with brain aging and Alzheimer’s disease.
NIH-funded research has found differences in gut microbiome composition among some people with preclinical Alzheimer’s disease, and these differences were associated with levels of amyloid and tau proteins in the brain. However, researchers are still studying whether microbiome changes contribute to Alzheimer’s disease or occur as a consequence of changes related to the disease.
This means that the gut microbiome is an important area of research, but it is not currently established that gut problems cause Alzheimer’s disease or that treating the gut can prevent Alzheimer’s.
The Gut, Liver and Brain Connection
The connection may extend beyond the gut and brain.
Researchers are also investigating the gut–liver–brain axis, including the role of bile acids and other metabolites produced or modified through interactions between the liver and gut microbiome. These substances may influence processes relevant to brain health.
This emerging research highlights how interconnected the digestive system can be with other organs throughout the body.
Can Diet Support Gut and Overall Health?
A healthy, balanced diet supports digestive health and overall well-being. Foods rich in fiber—such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes—can support beneficial gut microorganisms.
However, there is currently no specific diet proven to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, and research into how diet, gut microbiota, and cognitive health interact is ongoing.
Rather than focusing on one food, supplement, or “gut cleanse,” it is important to take a comprehensive approach to digestive and overall health.
Why Gut Health Matters
Your digestive system does much more than digest food. It plays important roles in:
Nutrient absorption
Immune function
Metabolism
Gut microbiome balance
Communication with the nervous system
Overall well-being
As research continues to uncover the relationship between the gut and brain, maintaining good digestive health remains an important part of a healthy lifestyle.
World Alzheimer’s Day 2026
On September 21, World Alzheimer’s Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and the continuing search for better understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and care.
The 2026 World Alzheimer Report, released on September 21, 2026, focuses on a new era in dementia clinical trials and the opportunities and challenges involved in advancing dementia research.
From the Gut to the Brain: An Area of Discovery
The relationship between digestive health and brain health is an exciting and developing field of medical research.
