World Patient Safety Day 2026

Safe Care for Noncommunicable Diseases

Every year on 17 September, World Patient Safety Day highlights the importance of making healthcare safer and reducing avoidable harm. In 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) focuses on “Safe care for noncommunicable diseases”, with the slogan “Safe care for life!”

Why Patient Safety Matters

People living with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) often require ongoing monitoring, treatment and follow-up. This means they may interact with healthcare services repeatedly over many years, creating multiple opportunities for safety risks—from prevention and diagnosis to treatment and long-term management.

According to WHO, 1 in 10 patients experiences harm during healthcare, and around half of this harm is considered preventable. NCDs account for approximately 74% of deaths worldwide, making safe and coordinated care an important global priority.

Patient Safety in Gastroenterology

At Abu Hammour Gastroenterology Center – Dubai Healthcare City, patient safety is an important part of every stage of digestive healthcare.

For patients with chronic or long-term gastrointestinal and liver conditions, safe care can include:

  • Accurate and timely diagnosis

  • Appropriate investigations and screening

  • Careful medication management

  • Regular monitoring and follow-up

  • Clear communication between patients and healthcare professionals

  • Helping patients understand their condition and treatment

  • Early identification of changes that may require further evaluation

Safe care is not limited to a single appointment. It is a continuous process that involves healthcare professionals, patients and caregivers working together.

Patients Are Partners in Their Own Safety

WHO emphasizes that people living with NCDs should be active partners in their care. Asking questions, understanding medications, keeping track of health information and communicating changes or concerns can all contribute to safer care.

For digestive health, this may mean discussing persistent symptoms such as abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, persistent heartburn or other concerning symptoms with a qualified healthcare professional rather than delaying evaluation.

Safe Care for Life

World Patient Safety Day 2026 reminds us that quality healthcare is not only about treating disease—it is also about preventing avoidable harm, supporting informed patients and maintaining safety throughout the care journey.
