Heartburn or Something More?
Understanding When Heartburn May Be GERD
Heartburn is a common digestive complaint that many people experience after eating. That burning sensation in the chest or upper abdomen can sometimes be temporary and harmless. However, when heartburn becomes frequent or keeps coming back, it may be a sign of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and should not be ignored.
What Is Heartburn?
Heartburn occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach. Because the esophagus is not designed to handle stomach acid, this can cause a burning sensation behind the breastbone.
Heartburn may occur after large meals, certain foods, or lying down soon after eating.
When Is Heartburn More Than Occasional?
Occasional heartburn can happen to anyone. But frequent or persistent symptoms may require medical evaluation.
You may want to speak with a gastroenterologist if you regularly experience:
Burning in the chest after meals
Acid or sour taste in the mouth
Food or stomach acid coming back up
Frequent belching or indigestion
Difficulty or discomfort when swallowing
Symptoms that become worse when lying down
Nighttime heartburn that affects your sleep
Persistent cough, hoarseness, or throat irritation
These symptoms can be associated with GERD, but other digestive conditions can cause similar symptoms, so proper evaluation is important.
What Can Trigger Heartburn?
Certain habits and foods may make reflux symptoms worse. Common triggers can include:
Large or heavy meals
Eating close to bedtime
Spicy or fatty foods
Coffee and other caffeinated drinks
Alcohol
Smoking
Being overweight
Lying down soon after eating
Triggers can vary from person to person, so identifying what affects you can be helpful.
Why Should You Not Ignore Frequent Heartburn?
Repeated acid exposure can irritate and damage the lining of the esophagus. Over time, untreated GERD can lead to complications such as inflammation of the esophagus and other esophageal changes.
That's why persistent heartburn deserves attention rather than simply being treated as a normal part of everyday life.
When Should You See a Gastroenterologist?
If heartburn is frequent, persistent, worsening, or interfering with your daily activities or sleep, consider consulting a gastroenterologist.
Seek prompt medical attention for chest pain that is severe or unexplained, especially if it occurs with shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back, because not all chest pain is caused by heartburn.
Take Your Symptoms Seriously
Heartburn may seem like a minor discomfort, but frequent heartburn may be your body's way of telling you that something needs attention.
Don't simply live with recurring symptoms. Early evaluation can help identify the cause and guide appropriate treatment.
