What to Expect After Your Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is an important procedure used to examine the inside of the colon and rectum and identify conditions such as polyps, inflammation, bleeding, or other abnormalities.

While the procedure itself may be over, knowing what to expect afterward can help you recover comfortably and recognize when you may need medical attention.

Mild Bloating and Gas Are Common

After a colonoscopy, you may experience mild bloating, abdominal fullness, or gas. This is usually caused by the air or carbon dioxide introduced into the colon during the procedure.

These symptoms typically improve as the gas passes and your digestive system returns to normal.

You May Feel Tired or Sleepy

If sedation was used during your colonoscopy, you may feel sleepy, tired, or slightly dizzy afterward.

Follow your gastroenterologist's instructions regarding driving, working, and other activities. You may need someone to accompany you home and stay with you for a period after the procedure.

Your Bowel Movements May Change

Your bowel movements may be different for a short time because of the bowel preparation used before the procedure. It may take a little while for your normal bowel routine to return.

Drink fluids as recommended and follow the dietary instructions provided by your healthcare team.

What If a Biopsy or Polyp Was Removed?

If your gastroenterologist performed a biopsy or removed a polyp, you may notice a small amount of rectal bleeding.

Your doctor will provide specific instructions based on what was found and what was done during the procedure. If tissue was sent for testing, you may need to wait for the pathology results.

When Should You Contact Your Doctor?

Although serious complications are uncommon, you should seek medical attention if you experience:

  • Severe or worsening abdominal pain

  • Heavy or persistent rectal bleeding

  • Fever or chills

  • Repeated vomiting

  • Severe weakness or dizziness

  • Other symptoms that concern you after the procedure

Do not ignore symptoms that are severe, worsening, or unexpected.

Give Your Body Time to Recover

Most people can return to their usual activities relatively quickly, depending on whether sedation was used and whether additional procedures were performed.

The most important step is to follow your gastroenterologist's post-colonoscopy instructions carefully.

A colonoscopy doesn't end when the procedure is finished—proper aftercare is an important part of a safe recovery.
